I would, if I had my way, banish the food bowl for all those cats fed on dry food. I love feeding biscuits in problem-solving receptacles (see interactive feeders) but it’s always useful to have food bowls to give you the option to provide variety to your cat’s diet and include a little wet food.
Ceramic food bowls are the most generally popular and probably the best bet. Plastic scratches easily and can give off a slight odour that your cat may not like. Stainless steel can be easy to clean but for those cats that wear collars it can make feeding a little noisy as any attachment bangs against the metal. Beyond that, the choice of bowl size or shape is dependent on personal taste so I would only add that some cats find it difficult to eat tidily from a plate without definite sides to it and elderly cats that have trouble bending their heads down may benefit from a raised bowl.
Automatic feeders (only available in plastic) with freezer packs are a good option for timing the odd meal if you’re not at home at the usual mealtime. Don’t forget to provide at least one bowl for each cat in your household.
